Student Teachers in training will receive the highest quality of TESL instruction during Pan Pacific’s TESL Teacher Training Diploma Programs.  The TESL Diploma Program includes 100 hours of intensive and comprehensive ESL methodologies, lesson planning, resources and job search skills.  Student teachers also complete a 20-hour teaching practicum with ESL students from around the world who are attending our Intensive (ESL) English Language Programs in Victoria.  Our International Student 100-hour TESL Program requires no practicum hours but includes microteaching.

Teacher Trainers / Instructors:

PPIEC TESL Instructors have been in the field of education for many years, as teachers and administrators both in Canada and overseas.  They have experience in many areas of education, including critical components such as teacher training and mentorship, program development, curriculum implementation, and organizational dynamics.  They are solid communicators with strong interpersonal skills and bring knowledge of key teaching issues to our team of professionals. 

David Christopher is an energetic and dynamic ESL Teacher with experience teaching all levels and with all ages of international students.  Most recently, he has taught domestic and international students alike as a TESL Instructor for the PPIEC 120-Hour TESL Diploma Program.  (TESL Canada Recognized)  David holds a combined B.A. in Economics and English Literature from Carleton University in Ottawa and is currently involved in his Master’s Degree in English Literature.  He has extensive experience as a public speaker with both televised and in class lecture experience from his university course requirements.  At PPIEC he has been involved with curriculum design for special projects and administrative duties.  He graduated at the top of his class in the BC TEAL and TESL Canada recognized TESL Teacher Training Diploma offered by PPIEC. 

Jennifer Douglas has experience teaching EFL and ESL at various levels.  She holds a B.A. in English Literature and she will be defending her M.A. in English this summer.  As part of her M.A. Program, she participated in a pedagogical theory course that included teaching at the University of Victoria and at Camosun College.  In addition, Jennifer worked as a writing advisor for the UVIC English Department’s Writing Centre.  Since September 2002, Jennifer has been involved in teaching Pan Pacific’s Int’l TESL Diploma Program and is committed to helping new teachers develop the theoretical and especially, practical skills they’ll need to be effective second language teachers.   

Laura Maguire Houston has had many years experience as an instructor of ESL and most recently as our TESL Instructor for our TESL Canada recognized Teacher Training Diploma Program.  Previous to this she has worked as a University instructor of Art History and a College Instructor of English and History.  She has a Diploma in Human Sciences, a Graduate Diploma in English As A Second Language (Adult Education Faculty, one year program), a B.A. Honors in English Literature, a B.A. Honors in Art History and a Masters course work in Art History.  She has worked as an English editor for second language English university students and for students in an aboriginal pre-university program.  She has frequently created curriculum for several courses she has taught, which has helped her TESL students to understand the concepts of curriculum development from a first hand source.

Jackie Mathers has had many years experience as an instructor of ESL and most recently as our TESL Instructor for our TESL Canada recognized Teacher Training Diploma Program.  Jackie graduated from UVic in the Applied Linguistics Degree Program.

Program Descriptions: 

TESL 120 Hour TESL Canada Diploma Program 

Students can complete this comprehensive 120-hour program within five weeks.  The program is divided into 10 separate modules (100 hours) presented sequentially, with a 20-hour practicum. TESL Canada recognizes this program worldwide. 

TESL 100 Hour International Student TESL Diploma Program 

Students can complete this comprehensive 100-hour program within four weeks.  The program is divided into 10 separate modules (100 hours) presented sequentially.  There is no practicum and this program is designed specifically for International Students.
 

TECYL - TESL 100 Hour Diploma for Children and Young Learners Program

 Students can complete this comprehensive 100-hour program within four weeks.  The program is divided into 10 separate modules (100 hours) presented sequentially.  There is no practicum however there is an observation module in the fourth week.

TESL Student Teacher Volunteer Program 

TESL students are invited to take part in this volunteer program, which allows them to add valuable experience to their teacher training.  As part of their program, TESL students can volunteer to lead and take part in the PPIEC Conversation Club, (Saturday afternoons at PPIEC), and also take part in the tutoring of individual students.  Any student who completes 10 hours or more will receive a certificate of recognition from Pan Pacific and will be able to use the experience on their resume.

Program Developers:

The Intensive International TESL Diploma Programs (120 Hour and 100 Hour program for Children and Young Learners), designed by the CEO and owner of PPIEC, Thaddeus K. Monckton (B.Ed., M.Ed., Ed.Admin.), and an ESL Doctorate, provides participants with a solid theoretical background and hands-on practical experience working with ESL students of different ages and levels. Dr. Karen Woodman (B.Sc., M.A. TESL, Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics) helped design the 240-hour program along with PPIEC and has extensive experience in the fields of ESL and TESL (teacher training). Our TESL Instructors have been in the field of education for many years, as teachers and administrators both in Canada and overseas. They have experience in many areas of education, including critical components such as teacher training and mentorship, program development, curriculum implementation, and organizational dynamics. They are energetic and solid communicators with highly developed interpersonal skills. Our instructors bring a working knowledge of key teaching and learning issues in ESL classrooms, to our team of professionals.

Prerequisites and Requirements for Students in all Programs:

(a)                Trainees applying for admission to programs must have completed their senior matriculation (Grade 12) including a ‘C’ grade minimum in English 12.  Some post-secondary education is recommended.

(b)               Trainees who are non-native speakers of English must prove proficiency in English by submitting official documentation for one of the following English proficiency tests before they commence the program.

B). TECYL - TESL for Children and Young Learners 100 Hour Diploma Program

Students can complete this comprehensive 100-hour program within four weeks.  The program is divided into 10 separate modules (100 hours) presented sequentially.  Teacher training theory is emphasized with an activity-based focus on the methods and techniques proven effective in language training for children and teenagers. There is no practicum however there is an additional 10-hour observation module to be conducted in real child and youth classrooms throughout the Victoria area.

TESL Student Teacher Volunteer Program

Course Outline:

(1)   Classroom instruction

                     Interactive lectures and activities outline the theory for each module.

                     Students will be asked to prepare several peer-teaching sessions.

                     Evaluation is based on homework, assignments, exams, and participation.

(2) Practice teaching

                     Under supervision of a mentor teacher, after an initial period of observation, students will be required to teach ESL classes.  Students will progress gradually from observation through assisting the mentor teacher to teaching the ESL class for an extended period of time.

                     Students will be required to meet with their mentor teacher before and after the class to discuss class direction, goals, performance and progress.

                     Practice teaching sessions are scheduled outside of TESL class time

Textbook and Materials:

The course is based on a core textbook and the Pan Pacific International English College   “ESL Student’s Manual”, which each student will receive. Students will also have access to up-to-date job listings, along with other supplementary materials and handouts.

Course work and Evaluation:

In order to be eligible for the Pan Pacific International TESL Diploma, candidates are expected to participate in the course for the full duration of the program.  Candidates will be allowed no more than 10 hours absence per month.  The Coordinator must approve absences. Students who are absent from more than the allowed number of hours will be allowed to continue, but will not receive a diploma.  The course work includes assignments, written exams, and practicum and in-class presentations.  Candidates must score a minimum of 75% overall on their final transcripts.

NOTE: Programs A and B.  Students registered in any one of the above TESL Programs will be given free admission to all of our Conversation Workshop, which is held every Saturday from 10am to 12 noon.

NOTE: Practicum, Observation and Conversation Club hours occur during daytime class hours Mon-Sat between 9am – 5pm.

NOTE: The Materials Fee is mandatory and includes your student PPIEC workbook, handouts and photo copied materials.

NOTE: Textbook Buy or Rent Option is available.  Textbooks that are rented must be returned with no writing or marks to get refund.  If the textbook has marks or writing then you must buy the text and your rental portion will be refunded.

NOTE: A Program Date Change Fee applies and is charged if you decide to change your program date.  PCF = $250.00

*Non-Refundable Deposit: Your registration will be confirmed and your seat reserved, upon receipt of the non-refundable Registration Fee ($275.00) and the non-refundable Program Deposit ($250.00).  Total required is $500.00 (non-refundable).  All refunds are based on the net amount of fees owing after the $500.00 deposit is deducted.  Program dates may not be changed without written notice and payment of a $250.00 Program Change Fee.

*Refund Policy: The Pan Pacific refund policy is as follows.  To receive a refund of any portion of tuition fees you must give PPIEC or its member schools written notice that you intend to withdraw from the program in which you have enrolled.  If a Student Authorization is denied, PPIEC will retain the $525.00 non-refundable fees and refund the balance of the tuition fees to you.  If you are eligible for a refund you will receive it within 30 days of your written notice.  All refunds are calculated on the fees for the program less the non-refundable $525.00 deposit paid upon registration. 

If you cancel in writing before your program starts PPIEC will retain the following tuition fees less the $500.00 non-refundable deposit paid:

NOTE:  The TESL 120 Hour program is recognized by TESL CANADA.  This program does not qualify graduates to teach in the public system, nor lead to a BC Teaching Certification.  After graduation from a TESL Canada Diploma program you may apply for level 1 TESL Canada Certification only if you already have a university degree from a recognized University.

Overview

The TESL Canada National Professional Certification standards are based on level of education, TESL training, teaching experience and positive performance reviews. The following chart indicates the requirements for each level.
